Hello, I am new on the forums but since I have lived in South East Asia for a while I figured I could help a few people out with China.
China is a great source for products, considering most are made there. During the peak of the internet thanks to trading companies like Ebay China became known as the wholesale capital of the world. This is true but what most people are unaware of is, unless you plan to buy 1000+ or 10000+ there is no need to deal with China. I have traveled to almost every country in this part of Asia (except Myanmar) and I can tell you China on the small level (example: buying 1 to 50 shirts) is way more expensive than the rest of Asia. Even in Turkestan they are cheaper in the open markets. When I say China this also includes Hong Kong.
If you plan to sell in small quantities there are three good locations to buy from.
Clothing, Perfume, Womens Accessories, and some times Electronics etc. Kuala Lumpur Markets
Hand made crafts, jewelry, sometimes Electronics etc. Bangkok Markets
Clothing, Sunglasses, Beach Clothing, Hippy Clothing etc. (never electronics) Bali, Indonesia.
Bali used to be a lot cheaper when I was going there about 4 years ago but thanks to tourism it has started increasing in price.
So for all of the wholesalers trying to get the best deals from China buy in the thousands or dont waste your time. Talk to any backpacker, traveler, and ask them about what I am telling you. You will never meet someone who says the China markets are cheap. The Chinese knows China has that reputation and knows they can charge more because of it.
This is Just an example of how it is.
Example:
AAA Replica Coach Handbag Pricing
China and Hongkond Markets: $60usd
Bangkok Markets: $50usd
Kuala Lumpur Markets: $30usd
Bali Markets: $40usd
I live in Kuala Lumpur and what most people outside of travelers dont realize that Kuala Lumpur is one of the biggest international stops due to all the airlines that fly direct to here. Including now AirAsia to UK and Australia. Because of the rapid growth KL has become known as the stop to get your cameras, clothing, perfume, etc. before heading back home. More and more the news is getting out and it is becoming more known.
So when you want to buy say only 1-100 products stick to the South East Asia big markets. These markets go in together to buy from China. Sometimes because the markets work together they purchase a semi truck or two full. This in return creates more negotiating power and in the markets the price is lowered for everyone. (you still have to negotiate like crazy)
I hope this information helps some people, but dont listen to me as factual. Ask around, talk to experienced travelers as well as wholesalers and you will see the true side of Asia wholesaling.
Thanks
