Hi Shoprichards,
Have a look at the following posts on the topic:

Dealing with The Chinese
These are very helpful posts!
The basic steps I use to verify Chinese suppliers (and this may also applies to other suppliers) are:
1. I run a Whois check on their website and make sure I only deal with those who have been online for at least 2 years.
2. I check for satisfactory contact details -phone number, physical address that I can check in Google Maps and email address preferrably from a business email account and not from a free email provider.
3. I check for safe payment methods like credit cards and PayPal so I can be sure that if something goes wrong, the transaction can be reversed. For some Chinese suppliers, they also accept L/C which is also a safe way of paying them for goods. But I'd suggest only using this method for really huge purchases.
4. I make a small sample order first to test them and to see the quality of their products.
5. And finally, if you wish to buy BRANDED goods, I'd suggest not sourcing them from China. Since the vast majority of branded goods from China turned out to be fakes, I'd say, assume that this is the case every time. They are a very good source of unbranded, generic goods though. Since these products are manufactured there, then, they can definitely give you the best price!
If you wish, there are also advertisers here who can verify them for you or who can be your representative to Hong Kong Trade Shows and check out the suppliers for you for a fee.
Hope that helps!
Cheers,
Haydee
