well i don't know how to advise you anymore than others have said but if you are de reg vat is wont be done in a cpl of days.best thing to do is to do it asap.you will still have to do your quarter return you have no choice.if ur really stuck & need a bit of help feel free to pm me as i do my own book keeping for my flooring business i can advice u with the basics if u don't know them.One last thing steve from the date you got ur VAT number have you been using this to open new accounts with new suppliers?

Appreciated... not opened any new accounts - purchase invoices show vat amounts but not my vat number on them - does this mean i cannot claim it back?

No thats fine purchases invoices will never show your vat number just the companys vat number.Anything from the date you reg not the date you got number will be req for your return as long as the invoice has the vat number of company you purchased from.

So what about customs tax?

You can claim back customs VAT back too.
