Memory, like gasoline and other commodities, is traded and sold daily on a spot market. It's not that 1GB has gone up, it's simply that 2GB has dropped below 1GB and until someone is willing to take a loss on what they have, it will stay that way.
But, never fear, there are always holidays coming in China and the prices always climb after the holiday.
When dealing with electronics sellers, you can tell when you are getting to the factory, or close by, when prices are quoted for the product, let's say an MP3 and at the bottom of the page is the footnote "plus memory" and the daily quotes for each size memory.
And even then, you may have a choice of Best Samsung memory, better Taiwan memory, OK Korean memory, fair China memory or floor sweeping memory.
The same for batteries. Even for something like an mp3 there are poor, good, better, best. And those who buy on price get the floor sweeping and the poor.
That cheap crap is great if you are a traveling man, hitting a different car boot each week, but if you're standing still in one location, it will bite you in the butt in a hurry.
