Just got off the phone to a good friend of mine.

He sells tv brackets on Amazon and his own website. On amazon he turns over between £20,000 and £30,000 a month - until last week.

His sales just took a dive overnight and he couldn't figure out why.

Until he got in touch with his Chinese supplier...

Who now won't deal with him.

It turns out that Amazon have been in touch with this supplier and gave them a massive order on the proviso that they don't deal with my friend.

Amazon now sell these TV brackets and my buddy's business has been destroyed...

    Not good!

    Not good at all!

But that is business, unless products are patented this can happen to anyone! :(

Unfortunately that is a big part of Amazons business model. It's a risk any seller takes when they use Amazon as a selling platform.

Hope your friend can work something else out.

Amazon's selling platform is just a massive market research facility. If you perform market research for them they will eventually work out to sell the item themselves.

Very sensible thing to do. Playing a bit dirty but what can you do.

    That is a stupid post...
    In what way?
Why would you not? Do you mean sell on their sites, rather than "deal" with them?

If they offered to buy 100,000 units of something you had patented would you turn them down?

But eBay is a pure platform where they themselves don't compete with the sellers. It's different from Amazon in that sense. I cannot compete Amazon's price with most items that I sell.

Really sneaky of them. But then, everyone who does business they are already aware how Amazon have been sourcing their products!

That's exactly what I said. They let you do all the research, testing etc and then they ring your neck.

That's why I'll never use them

But surely a years worth, for example, of sales at £20k a month is better than none!

    Did he also use FBA?

Did Amazon specifically tell the supplier not to deal with your friend or did they just sign an exclusivity deal?

From what he said, they have told the supplier to cut him out.

He used FBA, that's probably how they got in

Of course it doesn't but why would you give up on thousands of pounds of potential income just because Amazon lack principles?! It's a futile protest if you think about it! Cutting off nose to spite face rings a bell!

It may be underhanded but that's the risk of selling (and doing well) on a massive retailers website (a sad but true fact).

    No one is giving up.

But it's a massive blow. He's going to have to try and find another supplier just to keep his website in operation

You know, it makes me wonder if other accounts that have been suspended for no apparent reason have been done so because they offer Amazon too much competition.

    Just a thought......
