What risks are there with Amazon FBA as opposed to dropshipping?!

Yes dropshipping is totally different from Amazon FBA.

Completely different fulfilment model Amazon should be more profitable but you need to invest in the right stock, drop shipping, no stock.

Have you ever used FBA? We use it and I wouldn't call it a big operation by any means. It's also far more profitable than dropshipping.

Does this only work for orders that are placed through Amazon then? Do I need to keep some of my products in case someone orders from me personally?

You don't have to keep separate inventory for the outside-of-Amazon buyers. Amazon will take care of those buyer, you just need to submit a fulfillment request to Amazon.:)

Er.... I think these are a little different, so you have to compare drop shipping and FBA.

FBA is a way for sellers to let Amazon do all the hard work for them…at least this is how I see it. Somewhat similar is the case with Dropshipping. It is a mode of supply chain management wherein the retailer doesn’t handle fulfillment, but rather forwards customer orders to the manufacturer or warehouse, who then picks and ships the goods ordered, to the customer.

With Amazon Fulfilment you buy the stock up front and then it is stored in Amazon's warehouse and when you receive an order Amazon with pack it and dispatch it to your customer for you. With drop shipping you don't need to purchase the stock up front but buy as needed direct from the wholesaler who then dispatch to the customer. With Amazon FBA you have to have the money up front to buy the stock and if the product doesn't sell quickly it could take you a while to get your money back. With drop shipping you don't need to buy up front so you are not at risk of having stock that isn't selling, but profit margins are lower in the drop ship model

Both can be easier... both can have the higher success rate.. all depends on situations:

    cost vs cost
    competition v competition
selling on amazon v selling multiple channels
    analytics v no analytics.

start dropshipping... work out what sells and what is ranked high on amazon then use those analytics to test pushing products into Amazon FBA
