I normally pay my postage through paypal so doing it the way vicky has said means you would need the reciept/paypal print out for postage so you cant declare a higher postage cost than paid....writing it on the sales invoice (your copy) is just for reference and to make it easier to track it back if needed.

Would this apply to me? I too am a newbie on eBay with a rating of 6 but 100% Positive feedback.

I don't think I will ever have an inspection from HMRC. I think that's because I won't get taxed at 16 but then again I could very very very wrong. Would this be beneficial for me? Help anyone?

If you declare postage higher then is actually paid, does that not take into account packing materials? For example posting a book at £2.50 postage charged via ebay, actual postage via post office is say £2.10, but the other 40p for a jiffy envelope and other packing costs. Would that be correct?

    Thanks,
    N-I

    Hi,

Confirmation for Amazon - but i think relates to eBay aswell.

VAT is paid on the price paid to you by the customer

So for example is you charge £10 inc postage then you pay VAT on the whole amount and not on the amount you get (i.e. you pay VAT on the fees of ebay and PAYPAL)

This is probably going to seem like a ridiculous question but I've been using Ladyvgw's excel spreadsheet ( thanks ! ) for keeping track of my ebay sales and one of the coloumns is ebay invoice number. How can I find this number before my invoice for the month has arrived or do I just add this number in for every transaction at the end of every month ?.

Also I'm wondering how I can put my other costs into this such as envelopes and paper per transaction. Buying my packaging wholesale each envelope is costing me around 7p and the paper per transaction around 3p , taking into consideration my postage for my average item was 58p I was actually charging 68p to cover the envelope and paper.
This seemed sensible on ebay but when put into my accounts it appears I'm charging 10p to much.

This is a great spreadsheet. Theres also this website that works out all your costs based on start price and other details. You can then take these figures an put them in the spreadsheet. Ebay Fee Calculator
