I am in the process of starting a concept food stall in the UK and wanted to know if anyone had any useful advice on where to source fresh green coconuts in the UK. So far the only avenues are from Thailand/ Vietnam and sea/ air transport is putting costs up greatly. Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Liam

It is very likely that if you source coconuts in the UK, chances are these also came from other tropical countries (Costa Rica, Thailand, Malaysia etc).

I did a quick search in Google and there are some who sell them for around ₤33 for a dozen, also sourced from other countries. Maybe try to work on calculating with that price mark if you can compare it against buying directly abroad?

As @Erik said above, UK suppliers will also have imported from overseas and paid the associated costs plus added their own margin, depending on quantities you may be better of sourcing directly and comparing freight forwarders such as @Import Expert on here to find the best delivery price.

However if lower quantity (too low to warrant using a freight forwarder, then yes, it will maybe work out cheaper locally, best bet would be to look into it and do your comparisons based on your required quantities.

    All the best!

I used to import hundreds of tonnes of coconuts for a client in a previous life. They were from Sri Lanka if I remember correctly. As per Gary - really depends what quantity you are after. I'm assuming a full container would be far too many in one go so you will need to purchase from a UK fresh fruit/veg wholesaler.

Hi Autumn45 - Much more than it would cost to buy them from the UK in the first place... Importers of coconuts will ship at the very minimum a container at a time. Otherwise it would not be worthwhile.

Thank you @Import Expert... much appreciated.

Do you know roughly how many coconuts fit in a container or have a good company to recommend to get an idea on pricing for such a container.

@autumn45 - I can't remember off the top of my head - It's been a while since I've dealt with that market. You would probably need to get that information from potential suppliers themselves.
