If you are a UK tax payer then talk to Inland Revnue, they are really helpful:

    http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/

    Their contact listings start here:
    http://www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk/menus/contactus.shtml

Explain to them exactly what it is you want and they will give you the right info, they also have a Business Support Unit which will come out and give you free ongoing help and advice regarding tax and accounts. I figure if I do what they want the way they wanted they can't complain when I give it to them in that way!

    All the best.

For the UK your National Insurance number is used until the Inland Revenue issue you with a Tax Reference number.

Where are you trying to register? Other than informing the Inland Revenue of your self-employed status, there is no legal requirement to register as a sole trader. You say that 'they' are asking for a tax reference number - who are 'they'?

The Self-Assessment area is for your taxes for the year 2002/3. Not for registering a self employed. It could be worth calling your tax office.

This varies on your own situation. The Inland Revenue will discuss it with you if you call them.

There is a lot of information relating to this and how they charge tax etc. on their website.

As far as I know the requirement is that you must be eligible to work in this country without the requirement for a sponsor.

Oh, dear. I've been a Sole trader since 1995 and paying VAT since 1998 because I earn too damn much. Am I supposed to register as well?

Yes, but then again, back in 1995 the rules were probably different. And VAT is HMCE not IR.

Anyway, Mr Dickie Soccer, (are you a football fan?) you need to phone the Inland Revenue - they will register you over the phone. They can answer all your questions.

    (Is this déja vu?)
