    Accepting payments from your customers is a big chunk of your operations, if not the most important step in the checkout process. It’s a challenge to find the best payment processor (not one is perfect!) so you can catch yourself jumping from one provider to another.

    Based on several discussions I've seen here in the forum, I think PayPal is your best option especially if you are selling on eBay.

    Jenilee, I am just starting out, and I'm a little confused. We have a website, but we are currently not selling on our site. I am trying to decide whether to sell directly from our site, or transfer it into an ecommerce site such as Shopify or Bigcommerce. Do you have an opinion on what would be easier? It seems that setting up sales on our existing account may be an involved, daunting process, where going with one of those platforms might already have all of the payment/shopping cart features set up.....thank you.

    Hi Katie,

    I think it would be best for you to just sell on your own website. Simply because not a lot of customers like it if they are being transferred to different sites / portals. What's more, you might be spending more if you use ecommerce sites like Shopify, and managing your own website and another for selling could take more hours for you looking ahead.

    True that setting up your current site may be a daunting task, though you could have one person to do it for you for a one time fee. Take a look at our services section and you might be able to see one who could provide you with such service, I think it would be a better bargain for you in the long run and all website hits will be focused in just one place.

    Thank you Erik. I do agree with that. I wasn't really thinking of running two separate accounts, I was thinking of directing our existing domain to an ecommerce site and using that as our only site, for selling and everything. I think it would be too much to maintain two sites, and unnecessary. I have been researching the steps to taking payments on our own site, and between applying for the IMA, choosing a PSP, SSL, and everything that goes with it, I am overwhelmed to say the least. I will look into the services section and see what I think. Thank you very much.

    Sorry but I disagree with Erik, having someone else do it is never a one time fee unless a person becomes rather competent at installing / merging add ons (as and when needed), upgrading and fixing things when they go wrong, for example, I have seen 'one time fees' from around £300, for setup, etc. with further / later work to be charged extra (by either the same or different people / businesses), so to initially even dip their toe in the water to try it out would see them at least around that out of pocket, whereas hosted solutions start from around £15 per 30 days (albeit that's ours, shopify, etc. differ), and can be cancelled at any time should things not work out, if anything that's a far smaller risk to try, and all installations, updates, etc. are done for you.

    There is no real black and white answer as what is best depends on several variables, the primary one being the needs of the individual, I started with 'free ecommerce stores' and the amount of hours I have had to spend researching is pretty immense to be honest, but if I hadn't, it would have cost thousands over the years to get, and keep them how I wanted.

    Therefore, my suggestion would be to try them, see which suits, if a ready made solution fits the bill then why initially risk more than necessary? with most you can always move later should you wish and maybe have someone 'in house' which can keep on top of the technical stuff, yes, so called 'one time fees' may look cheaper on paper, but unless you can do it yourselves, then taking into account the extras of addons, upgrades, etc. over time, you could maybe get several years hosted with a competitively priced hosted solution for around the same or less, not to mention your time depending on what rate you value it at, I remember on many an occasion in the early days thinking I'll give it a go to save paying somebody" and eventually spending many stressful hours researching and using trial and error to get the site working properly again (this isn't a scare tactic, it's a true story).

    So as with anything it really depends on the individual and their needs, so my advice would be to test out as many demo's and free trials as you can and see what's best for you and the best value solution suited to YOUR needs and ability, and remember, cheapest and best rarely go together, what you need is VALUE, and that can only be perceived by you and what you want out of it.

    Just going to throw my opinion in on this one. I largely agree with Gary on this one. When you are starting out you need to limit unnecessary expenditure as much as possible and very rarely will a 'one off fee' for a wed design dev work ever truly be 'one off'

    Instead what I tend to recommend to clients of mine is to look at specialist e-commerce sites. To most I recommend Magento as the avenue to do this, largely because Magento will do everything you need it to do and it will grow with your business, eliminating the need to switch services down the line. I know a lot of people say that Magento is complicated but it can be as simple or as complicated as you need it to be. If you spend some time using the software then I would argue that this would be a better use of your time and you would get more value out of it in the long run, rather than paying for a third party to do it for you.

    I note you haven't mentioned Secure Trading. Here in the UK they're one of the larger payment gateways handling both online and in store transactions. The reason I mention them is that I have been doing a lot of research into this myself lately and by all accounts if reliability is your primary concern there is no more dependable provider.

    I am thinking I will go with them for payment processing on my new eCommerce website and would be happy to provide my thoughts on the experience once I've had a chance to assess it all, but in the meantime if anyone else has further details or would like to know more, do take a look round their site: Secure Trading
