In a prototype that looks like a Black Cab the Royal Mail are beginning trials in the next 6 months on a prototype electric van to deliver mail. The trial will start in Birmingham and then expand to other locations.

According to the BBC Paul Gatti, fleet director at the Royal Mail, said: "As a company, we are committed to making changes to our operations that reduce our environmental impact whilst ensuring we continue to meet customer expectations."

The vans are specifically designed to work well on lengthy stop - start journeys will smaller need for re-charge and it is hoped that they will pass the test and allow a roll-out to a 'greener' fleet for Royal Mail.
