    Thanks
    Sam

great work i run 3 of these here's my thoughts:

OSCommerce - dont even bother. With V3.0 has been in beta testing for over 2 years! When php 5.4 becomes standard all current versions will not be supported

OpenCart - great. easy, simple and nice to look at

Magento - the beast. Need a good host with this one but unrivalled in features

Great post and lots of information. I did look through all of these. I am a novice and found some of the open source software a little mind blowing so settled personally for a hosted ecommerce site. But now I am not convinced I made the right choice. Or maybe I did at the time as I did not have the knowledge or experience. However, I am looking again for a new ecommerce option as I would like to set up a website for drop shipping products. I am going to make a seperate post in case anyone can help as I found it difficult previously to find something to meet my specific requirements. It maybe it doesn¨t exist and I will have to use a shopping cart and a seperate web hosting.

I haven't looked deeply into any of these carts/templates, but after looking at these links, I really like the Basico template. I am currently opting for Opencart and the Basico Template.

Thanks for sharing these links. Much obliged.

I know this might sound really silly, but say I was to sign up with open cart, do they also provide the web host and domain or do I have to by those separate? And how does opencart work? Is it all controlled online or on my desktop? Why do I need to DOWNLOAD?

Ecommerce is all new to me so simple terms would be fantastic ha.

I know my way around XHTML, CSS and wordpress etc but never done eccomerce.
Would you recommend going down the opencart route or using a shopping cart plugin for a wordpress site?

I really don't know where to start with all this.

Let me just explain, I'm opening a vintage clothes shop and decided it might be more worth while and cheaper to do my own website instead of paying the fees on Etsy/Ebay.

    Super confused. x

Open Cart is the shopping cart software that you usually use on your own hosting account with your own domain (There are also hosted versions though) much the same as you would install and use Wordpress.

Using a cart platform like Open Cart will usually give you a lot more ecommerce functions and flexibility with your site configurations than you would get with many of the Wordpress ecommerce plug ins.

I would recommend CS-Cart. Our company works with this system for a long time and really loves it. As for Magento, this platform has so many features that not any other platform has but it is heavy and complex for small or medium business, I would recommend it for big retailers.

    hii,

I'm completely novice to this ecommerce business, was thinking to outsource this, but finding some useful information here. Can anyone help me step by step process to make e-commerce website. What I got here is:
a)register domain & hosting, any particular website?
    b)install opencart to your hosting.
    c)choose and buy template.
    d)upload your product and description
    e)start selling.

Is it that simple, the way I'm thinking or it I've to go through some difficult steps, any expert here to help me please!!!

Looks like you have pretty much summed up the process.

I would advise that you research which of the carts suits you best before you commit as there are pros and cons for all of them (Open Cart offers you good fiunctions and simple Admin area).

If you need a host that can help you set everything up as part of their service then drop me a PM and I will be happy to help ;)
