Hi Guest!

Our website stays online because of the support of our advertisers. A huge part of them are from banner ads that appear on our site. While some of them seems to be intrusive for some, these ads are needed to keep our community running and continue providing free membership service for buyers.

In light to this, we request that you disable ad blocking programs or add our website to your ad blocker's whitelist. This keeps us from offering our basic membership to everyone for free and help with maintenance costs of our website.

If you have already disabled ad blocking programs or added us into the whitelist, please ignore this message, this message will disappear in a few seconds!

Stop spamming introductions!

Been sat on the wall ,reading this thread for a while now.

    Here,s my view on it.
I now just come to the forum to get advice on business ideas, or to help in anyway I can, in return

I,m not a buyer or seller anymore.

As always I click on "todays posts"
I never go beyond page one (thats just lazy me)

This morning I found the page was full of intro replies.
So I left the forum and went elsewhere (came back when it was all clear)

Who knows, there may have been an adveriser with a job lot to catch my eye.
This potential offer may have been demoted to page two with all the intro replies, so never found out (unless they get bumped)

So what have I done to get round this ?
I,ve now got my link to the forum set to take me directly to the Advertisng and E-commerce page, as
this is the page that I find the most useful.

Simple solution for what I need.
But bad news for advertisers that may want me to read their posts

Would it not be better for the forum if the people saying 'hello' actually gave a toss what the person introducing themselves were saying? If someone comes on an asks a specific question or mentions something about themselves and all they get back is the generic 'Hello, welcome to TWF!' What are they meant to think?

They probably think the forum isn't up to much and move on. I don't think anyone has a problem with saying 'hello'. If someone comes on and asks a question in their first post and all they get in return is 'Hi!' (it happens), it's downright disrespectful.

I said before in this thread, I think paying advertisers has every right to get their sig around the forum as much as possible. However it doesn't take much effort to read the OP and possibly even interact with the new member introducing themselves.

Exactly. The majority of posters don't give a toss about new members they just want to spam.

    Fair points.
Personally I like to welcome people for welcomes sake.
It can be daunting for some people to post an intro , so I like to say hi back ;).
I don`t do it on all the Introductions, just some of them.

    Dave.

Agreed - plus if the advertiser did spend some time interacting with the OP, surely the OP would be more likely to use the advertisers services.

What, just sometimes you forget to have your eyes open when you do it?

No real disrespect intended, but there have been some days where there have been less than 10 introduction threads, I have personally reported 3 of those 10 where you have said "hi and welcome......" to a spammer, another 3 or 4 where I have provided some form of relevent response to basic questions from the op, even if just 'visit our marketplace' or 'use the search function this has been discussed previously' or sometimes even "forum advertiser ..... may be able to help"

Thesed are still 30 second replies but actually helping someone, I'm not saying I answer every question from every intro as I don't, however I at least attempt to help SOME, this isn't the role of an advertiser, it IS however the role of a mod, 90% (approx) of any of you "help" posts have said 'EAB, 60DBP, SAT forums, archived .... from your own sites, yet actually putting little or no useful info on here on those posts which make up the majority apart from introductions, can imagine you in a B&M store, customer comes in "have you got this in a size 12" and you simply responding "Hi and welcome to the store" unless YOU own it or are on commission!

There have been MANY occasions ahere I personally have reported 3, 4, 5 plus threads for advertising when you have been the only mod on (term mod used loosely), approx 30 minutes to an hour later (sometimes more), after continuing to spam irrelevent welcomes and promoting your own activities, you go offline with the offending (and reported) threads still present, granted, I have seen SOME saying "thread moderated by andy777 reason: adverstising without a membership" but very few.

I for one am VERY thankful to the new addition whereas I can report a new member advertising thread and it gets removed from view as if you're about it's the best chances it has of being removed from the public eye.

You may take this as a peronal attack if you so wish, I however call it 'a series of observations', and a call to open your eyes and think more of the community you are here to moderate.

and please don't play the "being a mod on a 80,000+ member forum" card (as everyone knows, this 80k + member count includes old members who haven't even signed in for a number of years and even banned accounts, I have moderated on forums wirth over 300,000 members in the past so know what a 'busy' forum feels like). As generally there are never more than several hundred on at any given time including non members, the actual amount of signed in members is generally around 80 - 100, ok, missing advertising, etc. on threads you haven't seen yet is one thing as going through every single new thread is very time consuming and you may not have seen the reports on occasion, however, missing advertising in threads that you have responded to and apparently 'read' is a completely different thing as it proves that you haven,t and now you have been called out on it you still claim that you read it, errrr....HOW can you expect that to be believed???

That and of course the fact that the other mods generally manage the majority of the time.

    That's simply not true.

You have no idea on how many people I have helped on this forum.

And yes - I take it as a personal attack.

    Andy

P.S. Wow, this must be really hurting you if you wrote such a long post.

    Gary,

I just checked your previous posts - you have plenty, plenty of simple, one liners like "hello & welcome to forums".

    UPDATE: 02/06/2011

Backed by popular demand our development team have released new functionality today.

NOTE: AN UPDATE HAS BEEN RELEASED MEANING THIS IS NO LONGER VALID - SEE HERE.

    * The introduction forum and new posts which reside within will now be limited to one row per page in the search results when you click "new posts" or "todays posts". (Illustration attached).

    * This notification contains a link to the introduction forum for those folks who wish to say hello to new members, it also contains a link to the very last post so that you can navigate quickly to the latest discussion.

    * At present there is no option to enable/disable this functionality. It will appear like this for all of you excluding our staff and the moderators. We will trial it like this for all members (excluding guests) and see how it is received amongst the community before making a final decision.

Comments/feedback on the functionality are welcome.

    Many thanks!
