Tracking number - what do the numbers & letters mean?

    Hi I have been sat in the background for a little while and this is my 1st post.
    I have just ordered a small quanity of items from china and they have provided a tracking number.My question is what do the numbers and letters mean.
    The parcel is being sent via china air mail CP*********CN .

    Its just a tracking number, you enter it online and it tells you where the parcel is.

    I think that the number at the end is location i.e. CN - China and CP is Customer package or china post, numbers are random i belive

    Missed this first time around.

    Those are the universal, worldwide postal tracking codes. The first 2 letters are not of any particular meaning, but the last two are for the country of the postal service which originated the shipment - GB, US, CN, HK, DE, CN, AU, etc. GB will be either RM or Parcelforce, CN will be either China Post or EMS, US is all US Postal Service, they don;t have a separate parcel operation.
