    In starting up and growing your business, expect to face several issues, incidental questions, and challenges (including fraud and fulfilling your obligations as a seller). Aside from community advice, you can take advantage of existing resources and help from government sites. Some are even just a tweet away! Take note of the sites and what they can do for you.

    1. Action Fraud - provides a central point of contact for information about fraud and financially motivated internet crime. You can report a fraudulent activity on this site. This site provides a live chat or you can fill out an online form to report an issue. You can call Action Fraud at 0300 123 2040.

    2. CE Marking – provides a guide on how to determine if a product complies with EU safety, health and environmental requirements, and how to place a CE marking on your product. It also provides a list of agencies responsible for CE marking enforcement in the UK depending on the products you want to sell in the market or import in the UK. Some of these agencies are:

    Trading Standards Services
    Health & Safety Executive
    Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency

    3. Citizens Advice - provides advice on how to complain about a particular business. They will be able to direct you to regulators such as Ofcom, local authority Trading Standards Services or other bodies who might be able to help. You can contact the Citizens Advice consumer service either by calling 08454 04 05 06, or by filling out an online enquiry form.


    4. Companies House - register your company information with them, and they make this information available to the public. You can get in touch with Companies House by phone and email.

    5. Department for Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS) - Resources on starting and growing your business. Find advice, finance, and mentors. Actively using #businessin you on Twitter. Contact BIS

    6. Food Standards Agency – provides guide about regulations that apply to specific products and general rules concerning labelling and additives. The site contains information on the regulations of specific products and banned or restricted products.

    7. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) - responsible with Income Tax, Corporation Tax and Value Added Tax (VAT) registration. HMRC provides online services like registering for HMRC taxes and sending your returns. Visit their contact us page and click on the specific link relevant to your concerns.

    8. Intellectual Property Office (IPO) - responsible for intellectual property rights in the UK, including patents, designs, trade marks and copyright. Provides services for the application of your intellectual property. Their site provides online services for applying patent, trade mark and design services.

    9. Office of Fair Trading (OFT) - responsible in the enforcement of competition law, consumer protection legislation and monitors consumer credit. One can report businesses that are not complying with these legislations. Visit their contact us page if you have related concerns or call 08457 22 44 99.

    10. The Sale of Goods Act (SOGA) – this site provides a comprehensive and up to date guidance on the Sale of Goods Act for retailers and business support organisations. This site provides training materials that you can access online or you can download them directly from the site


    11. UK Export Finance - provides government assistance to exporters and investors, in the form of insurance policies and guarantees on bank loans. For general enquiries, you can call +44 (0)20 7512 7000.


    12. UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) - works with UK-based businesses to ensure their success in international markets and encourage the best overseas companies to look to the UK as their global partner of choice.
